Huyton and the shop are both Knowsley, which puts the counter close enough that the question is never whether to go but when. So that is what this page is about: the shape of the trading week, and which hours of it are worth aiming for.

The trading week

The hours themselves are in the panel on this page rather than in this paragraph, and that is deliberate: they move through the season. They are longer in the back half of October than they were in September, longer again around the fifth, and they do not come back to where they started until the season is over. Anything written here would be out of date within a fortnight.

What does not move is the shape of the week. The quiet hours are weekday mornings. The busy one is Saturday afternoon in the last week of October, by a distance. If you want somebody to think about your evening with you rather than serve the queue behind you, a weekday morning early in the season is the answer, and the last Saturday before the fifth is the exact opposite of it.

Three things that only work in person

The first is size. A photograph of a barrage and a photograph of a fountain take up the same number of pixels, and the two boxes in your hands do not. Nothing on a screen fixes that.

The second is running order. When several pieces are meant to go one after another, the order matters more than any single choice within it, and somebody who has watched them go up can sort it out in two minutes. The same conversation in writing takes days of messages going back and forth.

The third is being told no. People get talked out of things at this counter more often than you would expect, usually because what somebody has set their heart on is the wrong answer to the evening they have just described. That is the real value of asking, and it is the part of shopping that does not survive being moved onto a screen.

Coming in with a list

If you already know what you want, bring the names rather than the descriptions. Fourteen categories sit under the main range and the floor does not have every one of them out where it can be seen, so a name gets you to the right shelf while a description gets you a guessing game.
