Not every firework night is a display. A great many of them are four or five things lit across an hour in the dark, and that evening has to be bought too. This page is about the small end of the range, which is the part nobody writes a page about.

What the small end actually is

That is a small number set against the 112 barrages and cakes, and it is meant to be. These are the pieces that fill the gaps between the loud ones, and an evening made only of loud ones finishes sooner and reads worse than people expect it to.

Buying for an hour, not for ten minutes

The mistake at this end of the range is treating it as an afterthought picked up at the till. An hour outside is mostly waiting, and what happens during the waiting is most of what anybody remembers afterwards.

Sparklers are the obvious filler, and they are also the only part of the range the people watching get to hold rather than stand back from, which is a different kind of evening for anybody under ten. Wheels do something else again: they are the only pieces that put the movement at eye level instead of overhead, so they change where everybody is looking.

A short errand rather than a trip

Of everywhere this shop serves, Kirkby is one of the quickest runs in, and that changes the arithmetic of the small end completely. Nobody mounts an expedition for a packet of sparklers. Adding them to an order that is happening anyway costs nothing, and calling in for them on their own is twenty minutes rather than an afternoon.

It also means two visits are possible. Buy the main pieces when you decide what the evening is, then come back in the last few days for the small things once you know how many people are actually turning up. That second trip is the one only available to people who live this near.
