Almost everything that goes wrong with a firework order is a date problem rather than a choosing problem. So this page is about the calendar: when an order actually has to be placed, and what changes as the fifth of November gets closer.

The two clocks

Collection runs on one clock and delivery on another. Something ordered for collection is ready the next day, all year. Something ordered for delivery takes five to seven days, because it goes out with a local carrier rather than a parcel network.

That gap matters more than it looks. A week in late October is the difference between having what you planned and having what is left, and the two clocks mean the same order placed on the same day can be in your hands either tomorrow or next week depending on nothing but which option you picked.

What the fortnight before does to it

In the two weeks before Bonfire Night, delivery takes longer than five to seven days. That is the carrier rather than the shop — the same local firm is moving everybody’s order in the same fortnight, and there is no version of that which goes faster.

Collection is the one that holds up through the rush, which is the real argument for a shop being near. From Leyland it is a short run, and in the first week of November being able to collect tomorrow rather than wait is worth more than it is for the other eleven months of the year.

Open the boxes when they come

Not on the afternoon of the display. This is the single most useful thing on this page and the most ignored: if something is missing or broken, it has to be put right, and the week before the fifth is the week there is least room to do it in. A box opened when it arrives leaves days to fix a problem. A box opened at four o’clock on the fifth leaves none.

Anything damaged wants reporting the same day or the next. Anything short, in writing, within five days of it arriving.

So, a working order of events

Decide what the evening is about three weeks out, while there is still a choice. Place the order with a fortnight to go if it is being delivered, and a few days if you are collecting. Open everything the day it arrives. Then the last week is about the weather and nothing else, which is the only part of this nobody can plan around.
