A wedding is the hardest firework order to get right, and it is the one most often placed by somebody who has never bought any. It is also nothing like a Bonfire Night order, which is where most of the bad advice comes from.

Why it is a different order

A display on the fifth of November is the event. At a wedding the fireworks are two minutes inside somebody else’s evening, and everything follows from that. Nobody is standing outside waiting for them; they come out, it happens, they go back in. A long programme does not read as generous, it reads as an interruption.

So the shape is the opposite of a garden display. One thing, or two, chosen to be unmistakably the moment, rather than a sequence that builds. The barrages and bundles built to run for several minutes are exactly the wrong purchase, however good they are.

The things that actually go wrong

Nobody owns it. A wedding order is usually bought by one person and lit by another, often a relative who found out on the day. Whoever is going to light it should be the one who comes in, or at least should be told what was bought and in what order.

The time is fixed and the venue has a view. Both are worth settling before the order rather than after, because a venue that says no, or says not after ten, changes what is worth buying.

It is bought too late. A wedding is planned for a year and the fireworks get a fortnight. Delivery takes five to seven days, collection is ready the next day, and a wedding in the first week of November is competing with everybody else’s Bonfire Night for the same carrier.

Worth asking for by occasion

Say it is for a wedding when you ask. It changes every recommendation, and the Padiham counter would rather sell one right piece than four wrong ones. The question that gets the best answer is not what you want to spend — it is what the two minutes are supposed to feel like.

Questions we get from Great Harwood customers

Do you deliver to Great Harwood?

Great Harwood is inside our delivery area, so you can order online rather than travelling. Delivery is £14.99, or £9.99 once your order passes £50. Allow five to seven days before your event, and rather longer in the fortnight before Bonfire Night — a local courier brings it and will call first to agree a time.

Is it cheaper to collect?

Yes, and quicker. Collection from the Padiham shop on 5 Burnley Road is free and ready the next day, against £14.99 for delivery and five to seven days. If you can get there, collecting wins on both counts.

Can I just turn up at the shop?

Yes. You do not have to buy online first — buying ahead only means it is picked and waiting for you when you arrive.

How old do I have to be?

Eighteen. ID is checked on collection and on delivery every time, and whoever takes the order has to be able to sign for it. The driver cannot leave fireworks with a neighbour or in a porch.

Can someone help me choose?

Ring the Padiham shop on 01282 773923. Tell them what the evening is for and roughly what you want to spend, and they will tell you what works together and what to leave out. It costs nothing.
