Two numbers on this site look alike and mean opposite things, and almost every confusion about what somebody has actually bought comes back to mixing them up.

Pieces and shots

A piece count is how many separate fireworks are in the box. A shot count is how many times one firework fires. 33 items in the range state a piece count and 94 state a shot count, so most things have one or the other and a few have both.

Read the wrong one and the error is enormous rather than marginal. A box of eleven pieces is eleven separate things to set up, eleven fuses, and an evening that needs organising. One barrage marked a hundred shots is a single thing to set up and about a minute of your attention. Those two can sit at a similar price and describe themselves in similar words.

Which you want depends on the hour, not the budget

Pieces buy you an evening. Shots buy you a moment. If the plan is people standing outside for an hour, a piece count is the number that tells you whether there is enough to fill it; if the plan is one impressive thing at a fixed time, a shot count is the one that matters and a piece count is irrelevant.

The piece counts in the range run from a single item up to a hundred. The hundred is a box, not a hundred-shot barrage, and that is exactly the pair of numbers worth looking at twice.

What neither number tells you

How long any of it takes. A high piece count is a long evening only if the pieces are long; eleven fountains and eleven rockets are the same count and nothing like the same night. The counts tell you how much there is, never how long it goes on, and anybody deciding between two boxes on counts alone is comparing the wrong thing confidently.

The quick way through it

Work out roughly how long people are going to be outside, then ask which of the things on your list fills that time.
